How to Type the Euro Symbol (€)
The euro sign € is the currency symbol of the euro, the official money of the eurozone. It is easy to type on almost any keyboard - here is how to do it on Windows with an Alt code, with AltGr on the European layouts, or simply by copying it straight from this page.
Type the euro symbol with an Alt code
On Windows the euro sign has a built-in Alt code that works on any keyboard layout. Hold down the Alt key, type 0128 on the numeric keypad while Num Lock is on, then release Alt - the € appears. The digits must come from the numeric keypad on the right of the keyboard, not the number row above the letters, because Windows reads Alt codes only from the keypad.
On a laptop without a separate keypad, switch on Num Lock and use the small embedded number keys, or just copy the symbol below. On a Mac there are no Alt codes: on the US layout press Option+Shift+2, or open the Character Viewer and search for “euro”.
Type the euro symbol with AltGr
Most keyboards used in Europe carry the euro sign on their third level, reached with the right Alt key - the one labelled AltGr. Hold AltGr and press the key shown for your layout:
- AltGr+E - German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and the Nordic layouts (Swedish, Finnish, Norwegian, Danish), along with most other European keyboards. The euro is printed on the E key.
- AltGr+4 - the United Kingdom (UK) keyboard, where the euro shares the 4 key with the pound sign £.
- AltGr+5 - the US International keyboard.
If AltGr does nothing, your layout may put the euro on a different key, or may not have one at all - the standard US (QWERTY) layout, for example, has no euro key. In that case use the Alt code above, switch to the US International layout in Windows, or copy the sign from here.
Type the euro symbol on our on-screen keyboards
You do not need any special key - you can type the euro sign right here on Qwertia. Open our online keyboard and switch to a European layout such as the German, French or Spanish keyboard, then press AltGr to show the third level and click the € key. You can also pick it from our symbols and Alt codes reference, where a single click copies € to your clipboard.
